Fulcrum Pro alternative for job shops, Fulcrum manufacturing software compared with a flat per plant scheduler
ProductionPlanning.ai is a Fulcrum Pro alternative for job shops and fabricators whose problem is the schedule, not the whole back office. Fulcrum is a cloud ERP for precision manufacturers that covers quoting, jobs, scheduling, inventory, quality and accounting, priced by your shop's annual revenue with a one time launch fee and no public price list. We do one job: load every machine against its real shifts and show which orders will ship late, from 149 USD per plant a month with unlimited users. The comparison below is honest, including where Fulcrum is the better buy.

Which Fulcrum this page compares
Two unrelated products share the name. Fulcrum at fulcrumpro.com, which most people search as Fulcrum Pro, is manufacturing ERP and MES software from Minneapolis for CNC shops, sheet metal fabricators and made to order manufacturers. Fulcrum at fulcrumapp.com is a mobile forms and field inspection app for utilities and survey crews. Most "Fulcrum alternative" lists you will find mix the two together, which is why they recommend form builders to machine shop owners. Everything on this page is about the manufacturing ERP.
Why job shops look for a Fulcrum Pro alternative
Fulcrum is a modern, well regarded system, and shops that leave it are rarely unhappy with the software. Shops that start looking elsewhere during a sales cycle usually hit one of these first.
- There is no public price. Fulcrum quotes each shop, and third party listings say the number is set by your gross revenue and by how many other systems you connect
- The price is tied to revenue. A good year moves you into a higher band even if the same six machines and the same planner are doing the work
- It is an ERP. Fulcrum wants to hold quoting, jobs, inventory, purchasing and the books, so switching means moving the whole shop, not adding a schedule
- A launch fee comes first. Fulcrum's own implementation page describes a fixed, one time launch fee, and SoftwareConnect lists 5,000 USD or more for the smallest band
- Many shops already have quoting, QuickBooks and a quality binder that work. What they lack is a finite capacity plan that says on Tuesday that Friday's order is going to be late
If most of that list fits your shop, the real decision is not which job shop ERP to buy. It is whether you need to replace how the whole shop runs, or put a real schedule on top of what you already have.

Fulcrum details come from fulcrumpro.com. Fulcrum publishes no dollar amounts, so every figure in its column is attributed to the third party that published it. The full cost breakdown by revenue band is in Fulcrum Pro pricing.
What revenue based pricing means for a growing job shop
Fulcrum and ProductionPlanning.ai agree on one thing that most rivals get wrong: nobody should pay per seat to let a machinist see the schedule. Both include unlimited users. The difference is what the price follows instead. Fulcrum's follows your revenue. Ours follows the number of plants.
| Shop situation | Fulcrum | ProductionPlanning.ai |
|---|---|---|
| 12 people, 2.4M USD revenue, one building | Smallest band, about 6,000 USD a year per SoftwareConnect, plus launch fee | 1,490 USD a year on Line, or 4,290 USD on Plant |
| Same shop two years later at 3.6M USD, same machines | Next band up, per SoftwareConnect | Unchanged |
| Adding a second shift and ten operators | No seat cost | No seat cost |
| Connecting QuickBooks or a CRM | Can raise the quote, per SoftwareConnect | Export the schedule on Plant, no extra fee |
| Year one, before your own hours | About 11,000 USD on the smallest band | 1,490 or 4,290 USD |
The fair caveat: that Fulcrum money buys a whole system. If you really are replacing quoting, job costing, purchasing and the books, a scheduler is not a like for like comparison and price is the wrong test. Our plans and what each includes are on the pricing page.
Where Fulcrum is the better choice
We would rather you buy the right system than the wrong one from us. Choose Fulcrum if any of these applies.
- You want one system from quote to invoice, and today that work lives in QuickBooks, spreadsheets and paper travelers
- Job costing is where your margin leaks, and you want estimated against actual labor and machine time on every job
- You cut sheet metal and want nesting results flowing straight into jobs and the schedule
- You are audited to AS9100 or ISO 9001 and want quality records inside production rather than in a separate binder
- You want the schedule to update itself from live shop floor data, and you have someone to own an ERP launch for a few weeks
Fulcrum is one of the more modern ERPs a small precision shop can buy, and for a shop ready to change how everything runs it is often the right call.
Where a dedicated scheduler wins
- Finite capacity on every machine and shift, holidays and planned maintenance included, on every plan
- The week's bottleneck named, with the jobs it will make late and by how many days
- Setup times per part family on Plant, with similar jobs grouped so changeovers stop eating spindle hours
- Sequencing rules you compare before you publish: earliest due date, shortest operation first, customer priority
- A published flat price per plant that does not rise when your revenue does
- No launch fee and no implementation project, and monthly plans you can cancel any time
- Sits next to the quoting tool, QuickBooks file and ERP you already run, instead of replacing them
The clearest fit is a 5 to 60 person shop that quotes fine, invoices fine, and still builds next week on a whiteboard. See the machine view on machine scheduling software, the load chart on capacity planning software, and how we fit job shops on job shop software. Fabricators should also read our metal fabrication software page.
How to run a real schedule without a full ERP launch
1. Export open jobs and routings
Pull open jobs with part numbers, quantities, due dates and the operation steps with setup and run times, from whatever system you use today or straight from your spreadsheet. The routing is the part that turns a due date list into a real plan.
2. Enter machines and shifts
Add a work center per machine, cell, laser or brake, with the shifts each one runs and the holidays and maintenance windows. For a 20 machine shop this usually takes about an hour, and it is what makes capacity finite rather than a guess.
3. Run the schedule and read the bottleneck
The first run gives a projected finish date for every open job and names the machine limiting the week. It is often the press brake, the five axis or the inspection bench, and not the machine everyone assumed.
4. Decide later whether you need the ERP
Many shops run the schedule on its own for a year and keep quoting and accounting where they are. If you later move to Fulcrum or another ERP, the routings and shift calendar you built here carry straight over, so nothing is wasted.
Questions people ask before choosing Fulcrum
What is the best alternative to Fulcrum Pro?
It depends on what you need. For a like for like job shop ERP, the usual shortlist is ProShop, JobBOSS2 and Global Shop Solutions, and we compare each on our ProShop ERP alternative, JobBOSS alternative and Global Shop Solutions alternative pages. If late orders are the real problem, a dedicated scheduler fits better and starts at 149 USD per plant a month.
How much does Fulcrum ERP cost?
Fulcrum does not publish a price. Third party listings say it is set by your annual revenue and the integrations you need, with unlimited users. SoftwareConnect lists 6,000 USD a year plus a 5,000 USD launch fee for shops under 3M USD in revenue, rising to 18,000 USD a year on its Pro tier. The worked numbers are in Fulcrum Pro pricing.
Does Fulcrum charge per user?
No. Fulcrum's sales material and third party listings describe unlimited users on every plan, with the price driven by revenue and integrations instead. ProductionPlanning.ai also includes unlimited users, and prices per plant instead of by revenue, so the bill does not change when the shop has a good year.
Does Fulcrum integrate with QuickBooks?
Yes. Fulcrum lists integrations with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, plus Xero, NetSuite, Acumatica and Sage. It also has its own finance and accounting module, so some shops move the books into Fulcrum and others keep QuickBooks and sync.
Is Fulcrum cloud based?
Yes. Fulcrum runs in the browser as cloud software and is not offered on premise on its public site. ProductionPlanning.ai is also browser based, so neither needs a server in the shop.
Can I use a scheduler instead of an ERP in a job shop?
Yes, if what hurts is delivery dates rather than quoting or costing. A finite capacity scheduler loads each machine against its real shifts and tells you which jobs will be late, while quoting, invoicing and quality stay in the tools you already use. The same logic applies to shops weighing MRPeasy, Katana or Fishbowl.
