Genius ERP alternative for custom manufacturers and job shops that need the schedule fixed before the ERP

ProductionPlanning.ai is a Genius ERP alternative for custom and make to order shops whose real problem is jobs shipping late, not a missing ERP. Genius ERP is a full manufacturing ERP for engineer to order plants, sold per user on a quote. Third party estimates put it at 80 to 250 USD per user a month with implementation from about 20,000 USD, so an eight user shop pays roughly 43,000 to 92,000 USD over three years. We do one job: load every machine and work center against its real shifts and show which jobs will be late, for a flat 149 USD per plant a month with unlimited users. The comparison below is honest, including where Genius is the better buy.

02 The name

What Genius ERP is, and who it is built for

Genius ERP comes from Genius Solutions, a Quebec City company that sells to small and mid sized custom, engineer to order and make to order manufacturers. Its own site names the industries: industrial machinery and equipment, sheet metal and fabrication, job and machine shops, mold, tool and die, pressure vessels and tanks, food and bakery equipment, automation, transportation, aerospace and defense. In October 2025 Genius bought CDID, the maker of Prextra ERP, and grew from about 125 to over 225 employees.

The product covers the whole plant. Quoting and estimating, CAD2BOM (bills of materials pulled from SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, AutoCAD and Solid Edge), purchasing, inventory, shop floor data collection, project management, quality control, job costing, accounting and a CRM all sit on one database. Scheduling is a module called Smart Scheduling, built on Drum Buffer Rope from the Theory of Constraints, with scenario planning and available to promise dates. It runs in the cloud on a subscription or on your own servers.

03 Why switch

Why custom shops look for a Genius ERP alternative

Bar chart of three year cost for an eight user custom shop. Genius ERP 92,000 USD at the Capterra figure, 56,000 USD at the SoftwareConnect figure and 43,040 USD at the low ERP Research figure, each with 20,000 USD implementation, against ProductionPlanning.ai Plant 7,722 USD and Line 2,682 USD with unlimited users

Genius is a serious system with a real following among machine builders. Shops that start pricing something else usually hit one of these first.

  • The price is a quote. Genius's pricing page says cost depends on shop size, users, hosting and modules, and offers an emailed estimate instead of a price list
  • The outside estimates disagree by a factor of three. ERP Research says 80 to 175 USD per user a month, SoftwareConnect about 125, ITQlick from 200 and Capterra about 250
  • Implementation is a project. Genius's own FAQ says 1 to 3 or more months, and ERP Research puts the services bill at 20,000 to 200,000 USD
  • Every person who needs the plan is a seat. Shop leads, the estimator promising dates and the owner each need a login to read the schedule
  • The shop needs one thing. Quotes, purchasing and the books already work; what is missing is a finite schedule and a list of the jobs that will be late

If most of that list fits, you are not choosing between two ERP systems. You are choosing between a months long ERP rollout and a schedule you can run this week.

04 Pricing

What Genius ERP costs, according to the sites that track it

Genius publishes no price, so every figure below is a third party estimate. Read each line as a range to test on the sales call.

Source What it says about Genius ERP pricing
ERP Research 80 to 175 USD per user a month, implementation 20,000 to 200,000 USD, support about 18 percent of license
SoftwareConnect 1,500 USD per user per year, about 125 USD a month
ITQlick Starts at 200 USD per user a month
Capterra 3,000 USD per user per year, about 250 USD a month
Genius Solutions Pricing calculator and an estimate by email, no public figure

Some sites quote the cloud subscription and some an on premise license spread over a year, which explains part of the gap. Our Genius ERP pricing article walks through every source and what moves a quote.

06 Cost

What Genius ERP would cost an eight user shop over three years

Take a 25 person fabrication shop where eight people work in the ERP: the owner, an estimator, a buyer, a planner, two shop leads, an engineer and someone in accounting. The sketch uses the low end of ERP Research's implementation range. It is arithmetic on estimates, not a Genius quote.

Cost line Low, ERP Research Middle, SoftwareConnect High, Capterra
Per user per month 80 USD 125 USD 250 USD
Subscription for three years 23,040 USD 36,000 USD 72,000 USD
Implementation, one time 20,000 USD 20,000 USD 20,000 USD
Three year total 43,040 USD 56,000 USD 92,000 USD

ProductionPlanning.ai for the same shop is 894 USD a year on Line or 2,574 USD on Plant, so 2,682 or 7,722 USD over three years, with all 25 people included and no implementation fee.

The caveat is a big one. Genius money buys quoting, CAD driven bills of materials, purchasing, job costing and the general ledger as well as the schedule. If you need all of that replaced, comparing it with a scheduler on price is the wrong test. Price only decides it when the schedule is the part you are short of.

07 Where they win

Where Genius ERP is the better choice

We would rather you buy the right system than the wrong one from us. Choose Genius if any of these applies.

  • You build custom machines or equipment and every job starts as a CAD assembly that has to become a bill of materials and a set of purchase orders
  • You quote complex, one off work and want the estimate, the job and the actual cost in the same system
  • You want Drum Buffer Rope scheduling specifically and have someone who will manage the constraint and its buffers
  • Your current ERP or accounting package is the thing that is failing, and you are ready to retire it
  • You have the budget and an internal owner for an implementation measured in months

For an engineer to order plant of 50 to 250 people replacing a patchwork of CAD exports, spreadsheets and an aging accounting system, Genius is one of the few ERPs designed for exactly that shop.

08 Where we win

Where a per plant scheduler wins

  • A published price, 149 USD per plant a month on Line and 429 USD on Plant, monthly and cancellable, or six months' price for a year (50 percent off)
  • Unlimited users, so every shop lead, welder, machinist and estimator can see the plan without a seat count
  • Finite capacity on every machine and shift, with holidays and maintenance windows, on every plan
  • Setup times per product family and automatic grouping of similar jobs on Plant, so changeovers stop eating machine time
  • Projected finish dates for every open job and the week's bottleneck named with the jobs it will make late
  • Nothing to install, and live the same afternoon from a spreadsheet of open jobs and routings
  • It sits next to what you already run, so QuickBooks, Sage, your CAD and your current ERP stay as they are

The clearest fit is a 5 to 60 person shop that has outgrown the whiteboard and does not want an ERP project to fix it. Fabricators can see how we handle setups on steel fabrication management software, and make to order shops on our job shop software page. If Genius is one of several systems on your shortlist, the same comparison exists for the ProShop ERP alternative, the Global Shop Solutions alternative and the ECI M1 alternative, and the manufacturing ERP alternative page explains when a scheduler next to your books beats a new ERP.

09 Moving over

How to compare the two on your own jobs

1. Export open jobs and routings

Pull open jobs with part number, quantity and due date, and each operation with its work center, setup and run time, from your current system or the spreadsheet you schedule in today. A Genius demo and our import both start from this list.

2. Enter work centers and shifts

Add each laser, press brake, weld cell, machining center and assembly bay with the shifts it runs, holidays and planned maintenance. For a shop with 20 work centers this takes about an hour, and it is what makes the schedule finite.

3. Run a week next to your current plan

Publish the schedule and compare the late job list and the bottleneck with what the floor sees today. Ask Genius to schedule the same jobs in the Smart Scheduling demo and check whether the drum it picks is the one your shop leads would name.

4. Decide what you are really buying

If the schedule is the only thing missing, a scheduler next to your books is the cheaper and faster fix. If quoting, CAD to BOM and costing all need replacing, Genius belongs on the shortlist and the scheduling question is answered inside it.

10 Questions

Questions people ask before choosing Genius ERP

What is the best alternative to Genius ERP?

It depends on what you need replaced. For a whole ERP, Capterra and G2 list NetSuite, Odoo, Acumatica, ProShop ERP, SYSPRO and MRPeasy as the usual Genius ERP alternatives. If quoting and the books already work and late jobs are the problem, a dedicated scheduler is the cheaper fix: ProductionPlanning.ai costs 149 USD per plant a month with unlimited users. Our best production scheduling software roundup compares eleven tools with real prices.

How much does Genius ERP cost?

Genius ERP does not publish a price. Third party estimates run from about 80 to 250 USD per user a month: ERP Research says 80 to 175, SoftwareConnect about 125, ITQlick from 200 and Capterra about 250. Implementation is extra, estimated from 20,000 USD, so an eight user shop should budget roughly 43,000 to 92,000 USD over three years.

Does Genius ERP have production scheduling?

Yes. Genius ERP includes Smart Scheduling, a module built on Drum Buffer Rope from the Theory of Constraints. It finds the constraint, schedules the shop around it, runs what if scenarios and gives available to promise dates at quoting. ProductionPlanning.ai takes a different route and loads every machine to finite capacity on every plan.

Is Genius ERP cloud based?

Yes, with a choice. Genius ERP runs in the cloud on a subscription, and Genius also offers it installed on your own servers. The hosting model is one of the four things its pricing page says change the quote, along with shop size, number of users and the modules you take.

Who is Genius ERP best for?

Genius ERP is built for small and mid sized custom manufacturers: machinery and equipment builders, sheet metal and fabrication shops, mold, tool and die makers, and tank and pressure vessel shops. Its strongest case is a plant that designs in CAD and needs bills of materials, quoting, purchasing and job costing in one system.

Can I keep my current system and add a scheduler instead of Genius ERP?

Yes. Export open jobs and routings from whatever you run today, import them, and the board shows projected finish dates and the bottleneck the same afternoon. On Plant the schedule exports back to your ERP, and Group adds an API. You keep quoting, purchasing and accounting where they are.
