Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page where one exists. MRPeasy's prices were re-checked on its own pricing page for this comparison. Where a vendor publishes nothing, the table says so rather than repeating a directory estimate as fact.

Four questions sort this list faster than any feature matrix.

• Is the capacity finite? A tool that lists jobs by due date without checking machine hours and shifts gives you a to do list, not a schedule. Ask the vendor to load one overloaded week and show you which order goes late
• Who has to see the plan? If the answer is the planner plus every shift lead, operator and the person answering the phone, per user pricing multiplies fast. A per plant or unlimited user price does not
• How long until the first real schedule? A scheduler goes live from a spreadsheet import in an afternoon. An ERP rollout runs for months, and the schedule arrives after the ERP is live
• What are you replacing? Replacing accounting, inventory and quoting is an ERP project. Replacing a whiteboard and a spreadsheet is a scheduling project. Buying the first when you need the second is the most expensive mistake on this list

If you answer those honestly, you will usually land in one of three groups: a light MRP, a full ERP, or a dedicated scheduler.

Our product. MRPeasy charges 49, 69, 99 or 149 USD per user a month depending on the plan, with 79 USD per block of ten users past the tenth. It covers inventory, bills of materials, purchasing and production planning in one tool, with a 30 day trial. Katana's Core plan starts at 299 USD a month with unlimited users, and manufacturing features are a 199 USD add-on, with sales orders billed by usage. It is strongest for brands selling through Shopify or similar stores that need stock and batches in sync. Job shops with long routings get less from it. See Katana MRP pricing.

Fishbowl is inventory software with a two way QuickBooks sync. Its three Inventory plans run from 229 to 729 USD a month and none of them includes manufacturing. ECI's JobBOSS2 comes in Silver, Gold and Platinum packages, licensed per user, with no published price. Below Platinum you choose Scheduling or Quality Management, not both. It suits job shops that want quoting, jobs and job costing in one place. The package details are in JobBOSS pricing.

ProShop pulls quoting, paperless travelers, scheduling, inspection and calibration into one system, priced per user on a quote. Global Shop sells One-System ERP with built in accounting, quality, shop floor data collection and finite capacity APS. It licenses by concurrent user with an upfront plus quarterly cost, and its own FAQ puts the average rollout at three to six months. Take a 12 person plant where the planner, two shift leads, a buyer, the owner and seven operators all need to see the plan. This is the monthly software bill before any implementation.

The ERPs are not overpriced for what they do. They include accounting, quoting, quality or inventory that a scheduler does not. The table only answers one question: what does it cost to put a real schedule in front of everyone who needs it. Before you sign anything, put the number next to last quarter's margin. If your books only exist as a bookkeeping export, turning that export into proper financial statements first makes the payback case much easier to defend to a partner or a lender.

A dedicated scheduler is the wrong buy if you have no inventory control at all and run out of material every week, if you need quoting and job costing more than delivery dates, or if you are audited and need inspection records inside production. In those cases start with the ERP or MRP that fits, and add scheduling later if its own planning turns out too coarse. If your plant invoices fine, buys fine and still builds next week on a whiteboard, the scheduler is the faster and cheaper fix. For small manufacturers there is no single winner. MRPeasy and Katana are the best light MRP options, JobBOSS2, ProShop and Global Shop Solutions are the main job shop and manufacturing ERPs, and ProductionPlanning.ai is the best fit when the only problem is late orders, at 149 USD per plant with unlimited users.

The best production planning software is the one that plans against finite capacity: real machine hours, shifts and setups, not just due dates. For a small plant that already has accounting and inventory, a dedicated scheduler plans faster and costs less than an ERP. For a plant with no systems at all, an MRP such as MRPeasy covers more ground.

MRPeasy is the most common pick for manufacturers under about 20 people because its entry price is low and it covers inventory, BOMs and purchasing. Katana suits ecommerce brands. If you already manage inventory and the pain is the schedule, you may not need an MRP at all.

Excel works until you have more jobs than one person can hold in their head, or machines with different shifts and setup times. No. A finite capacity scheduler runs next to the accounting and quoting tools you already use and imports open orders and routings from a spreadsheet. An ERP makes sense when you are replacing several systems at once, not when the schedule is the only thing broken.
